Had an awesome training run in the rain. Cloudy skies, clear mind.
- I've been a New Yorker since 1997.
- I run for wounded or fallen veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan.
- I ran my first NYC Marathon in 2007.
- I wear my brother's ID tag from his first tour of Iraq every time I run.
- When the going gets tough, I mentally say, "up, up, up, up" or "be here, no fear" (Thank you, Coach Shelly!) or "fighter" to get me through it.
- I remember the pain I felt at mile 9 was gone by mile 13.
- I know that miles 18-22 are when the mental demons and fatigue try to get the best of me, but I've conquered that distance many times in training and can get through it.
- I try to enjoy every minute.
- Running has taught me there are good days and bad and not to look back.
- I'm lucky to have a mother who drives all the way from Ohio to support me before, during, and after the 26.2 mile run.
- Two of the best days of my life have been the two times I've run and crossed the ING NYC Marathon finish line.
- My brother, Major Ben Simms, is my hero.
- When it seems like I can't go any further, when it seems like I want to give up, I remember why I'm doing this and quitting isn't an option.
